10 Tips for Taking Care of Jewelry

Every jewelry needs care if it must look great. Whether you have the best quality or a piece of replica jewelry, learning how to take care for them is essential. If you neglect these accessories, they may not last long. From taking care of your jewelry to cleaning them, you should understand what to do at each stage.

Here is what to do when it comes to jewelries:

Know When to Remove Your Jewelry

You should know that jewelry is delicate. Thus, you should know when to take them off, especially in some situations. For instance, you don’t need to use your jewelry whenever you engage in things that deal with abrasives or chemicals.

Some other times when you should not use jewelry include:

  • When you swimming in chlorine treated water
  • If you are cleaning your home
  • When you work in your garden
  • When you play games like contact sports

Don’t Wear Lotion With Jewelry

Many of us don’t understand that lotion can have a negative effect on our jewelry. Although  if you occasion get your jewelry exposed to lotion, it might not do much harm on them.  Some jewelry get their finishing dented when you use lotion on them.

We recommend that you don’t use lotion while your jewelry is on you. You should use lotion after you have removed your jewelry to keep them intact.

Put Your Jewelry on Last

We know how tempting it can be when it comes to wearing our jewelry first. However, they should be the last accessory we should wear.  They have to wait until you are done with every dressing to keep them away from makeup, perfume, or hair products’ chemicals.

When you have completed your dressing, you can try your rhinestones or diamond jewelry on.

Store Your Pieces Separately

We mentioned that jewelry is delicate and could easily sustain damage. Therefore, you should be careful with how you store them.  Often, we knock them together, get them tangled, or leave them carelessly after removing them.

These habits could reduce their lifespan or crack them,  you should learn to keep them away from corrosive items or liquids he you store them.  In addition, ensure that they don’t touch each other when you store them.

You can consider the following when storing your jewelry:

  • Get a jewelry tree for your earrings and necklaces
  • You have to separate your cloth pouches for vintage or precious accessories
  • Get jewelry armoires
  • Buy individual jewelry cases for valuable items
  • Use tarnish-resistant jewelry bags for silver pieces

You Should Travel With a Jewelry Case

Whenever you want to travel, you should consider going with a jewelry case to help you avoid tangling or spoiling your precious items. A lot of damages could happen when you travel. To protect your jewelry, you should find a safe place to keep them.

The case should be tangle free and easy to store any type of jewelry you possess.

Check Your Pieces Regularly

On regular bases, you should look at your accessories. Some of them can get damaged or dirty. You should take care of them before you use them again. For those that survived from tangling, you should be able to untangle them and keep them away from such situation.

Learn About Your Pieces Before Cleaning

If you are new to jewelry, you must not rush to clean them. The first thing to consider about any jewelry is the material used. You can save yourself expenses or loses when cleaning your jewelry by understating them.

For instance, we have different procedures for taking care of different precious items. Some of these pieces may not like water, while some can stay submerged without suffering damage.

Allow Your Jewelry to Dry Thoroughly

After cleaning your jewelry, you should ensure they dry thoroughly. Small amounts of moisture left over on your jewelry could spell doom for them. Therefore, wait at least an hour before you can store them after cleaning.

Make a Jewelry Care Kit

Do you have care kit for your jewelry? If you don’t have, you should have one at home. The care kit should have the necessary items, materials or tools that should take care of your jewelry.

Some of the things you should consider to add inside your kit include:

  • Rubbing alcohol: It takes care of metals and hard gems
  • Cotton swabs: For your polishing of hard-to-reach spots
  • Tweezers: To remove lint or reset your costume jewelry stones
  • Gentle, jewelry-safe silver polish: For sterling silver or silver-plated items
  • Commercial jewelry cleaners: For diamonds, precious metals, and some gems
  • Soft-bristled brush: To help you get into crevices
  • Soft chamois cloth: For drying and polishing
  • Glue: for reattaching gems to inexpensive costume jewelry

Understand When to Call a Professional

You should learn when to call a professional to help with your repair or cleaning. We believe that there is a place for professionals in maintaining jewelry lifespan.
