Djellaba: The Stylish Outfit That Makes The Difference

Djellaba: The Stylish Outfit That Makes The Difference

In a modern world where fashion has taken over our lives, we often find it difficult to pick the perfect native outfit. Djellaba is one of the beautiful outfits you can use for many purposes. Whether you reside in Africa or not, Djellaba can make your day. We have some of the best styles you can use when it comes to this outfit.

In Morocco, the word “jellaba” refers to the long and hooded robe which is worn as an outer garment by both men and women. When the attire is hooded, it is referred to as a burnus mostly in Maghrebi societies which are the Arab societies in North Africa.

In contemporary Arabic usage, the jilbab is a loose and full-length shirt dress that does not in itself connote head or face cover. Among Arabs, neutral or dual-gendered dresses are not associated with gender identity, behavior, or attitude. Due to culture, some attires may be similar or even identical in form but are worn differently by men and women who carry themselves in different ways.

The Use of Veil in Traditional Arab Culture

In the traditional Arab culture, both men and women can use veils. Even in Islamic societies, men and women wear veils, which cover the head and face. The importance of clothing, including veiling for men was studied systematically. It was observed that contrary to popular misconceptions the Hadith sources point to the disproportional attention given by Prophet Muhammad during Islam’s early days of community formation in the seventh century, to men’s modesty in clothing and public behavior in comparison to women’s.

Evolution of the Jellabiya

The Jellaba is part of the overall contemporary Islamic dress which was revived during the mid-1960s in the Islamic world. Generally, the Jillaba refers to a traditional attire that is worn by both men and women. In the past, there was only a particular style of clothing amongst the Islams. As a result, there was an extended use of these dresses in the formation of the Islamic community in the seventh century. However, during the early days, the clothing style changed with the emergence of new ideas and new meanings.

Some of the concerns which influenced the new clothing styles were distinguishing the status of the Prophet’s wives, establishing a socio-moral code for public behavior of Muslim men and women, marking group identity, and protecting the moral integrity of Muslim women. These concerns were reflected by the clothing references for both males and females. For the men, their clothing was to be austere, modest, and layered during prayer to prevent exposure of the body while they are prostrating or bending.
