The Batakari, also known as Fugu is traditional attire predominant in the northern part of Ghana, which is worn by both men and women. While fabrics like Ankara and lace are taking the center fashion stage in Africa, Batakari got its space jealously guarded with its designs.

The Batakari is a plaid garment that is similar to the Joromi and Dashiki popular in some tribes. In Ghana, particularly the northern part, many people wear the Batakari as it is a part of their culture. Presently, the batakari is more stylish with its new addition of a twist.
In the past, the batakari was a garment worn by kings in the three Northern Regions. However, with time, this fashion is now very popular amongst people. In most cooperate organizations, traditional attires are usually worn on Fridays as an avenue to increase patronage in goods that are made in Ghana, internationally promote the attire and its reach as well.
Hand-loomed strips of Kente fabric that are three to four inches in length are used to make the smock. Depending on the designer and the preference of the person wearing it, the batakari can either be sewn or woven. A cap is usually worn to complement the batakari.
Because of its cultural importance in society, the batakari is a symbol of power and tradition. Several occasions require the Fugu as the dress code, for instance, the Damba Festival celebrated by the people of Dagbon, Gonja, Mamprusi, Nanumba, and Wala of Northern Ghana. During burial and marriage ceremonies, the smock is also worn.
Many politicians can be seen wearing a party customized Fugu to rallies and conventions. The Fugu was officially acknowledged as a national attire when the former Presidents Jerry Rawlings and John Evans Atta Mills wore it extensively as their ceremonial gowns. Aside from its cultural importance, the Fugu possesses historical and linguistic significance.
The position of the Fugu can show rank, status, etc. For instance, If the cap is turned to the left, it denotes that the wearer is royalty. If the cap is work upright, it means that the person wearing it has the highest status or rank. If the cap is turned to the back, it means the wearer has followers. Then, if the cap is pointed forward, it means that there is nobody is behind the wearer and warriors mostly wear this style.
You do not have to be a native to wear this outfit. You can rock this outfit in different ways and still stand out in the crowd.
